Airwave Acro Team Success
During the Summer of 2001 Dominic Eller from New Zealand and Stefan Hodek
from Germany both flew Airwave Micros in the International Acro competition
circuit. Congratulations to them both for placing 2nd at the Omegna
International Acro Competition in August.
A Micro for Duver
Duver is a 14 year old pilot from the fvelas of Columbia. He
has grown up with flying but has always found it a real struggle to get a glider
to fly. Firstly because of his light weight of only 38kg, and secondly because
he is not the richest pilot in the world! At a recent competition he impressed
many international pilots with his flying skills, getting into goal on a
particularly difficult day with an incredibly oversized glider for him, even
though he carried as much ballast as he could carry.
After meeting Duver, Xavier Escalier from Airex made a special request to
Airwave to create a glider just for him: small, high performance and safe (not
to ask for too much!). Bruce set about a creating a very special extra small
glider derived from the Magic, by putting the Magic profile in a glider of
intermediate aspect ratio. With a projected area of only 19 sq m, the new Micro
was born.

Not only is the Micro excellent for the lightweight pilot, but it has also been
jumped on with enthusiasm by the Acro pilots. Markus Grundhammer did 41
consecutive helicopters on his first flight, and the young French pilot Julian
Wirtz from Barcelonette very intensively tested the glider last weekend in
Annecy at the French Federation SIV course for pilots under 21. Julian reported
that the Micro was incredibly easy to do loops with and that you did not even
need to be a super hot pilot, because of the incredible energy retention! Sats
are also straightforward on the Micro.
The Micro is expected to obtain a DHV2 when certification is finally achieved.
But testing a glider so small is not so easy, 40kg test pilots are few and far
between. The first production run of Micro's are expected to arrive at Airwave
shortly.
